It is unusual to find a book written by a lawyer which is full of down to earth practical advice presented in an easily digested and light-hearted format. This is just such a book. Miss Russell has immense experience in helping employers manage the problems posed by employee’s absence in all its forms, from long-term illness to Mondayitis. She wears her learning lightly and does not overpower her readers with legal jargon. Several sections of the book made me smile, especially the sections on return to work meetings and the Headmistress technique. That said, the book has a serious purpose in assisting managers who have to deal with them do so effectively and avoid the minefields of disability discrimination and unfair dismissal. The book contains useful sections on obtaining and using medical advice and handling stress at work. It also contains a number of useful sample letters and other materials. It should be on the bookshelf of every businessman and woman who has to deal with staff issues as part of their stock in trade.
