Birthday bashSeptember will see the publication of my new book Off the Sick List! How to Turn Employee Absence into Attendance. To show how not to do it, we engaged Ricky Gervais look-alike Tim Oliver to film a return to work interview, with predictable but highly enjoyable consequences. All our clients will be getting a copy of this spoof in due course (with suitable disclaimer attached).
In addition to the new book, Russell Personnel & Training is ten years old this year. We decided to celebrate by holding a lunch for our clients. It was great to see people chatting away together, although I suspect at least some of them may have been swapping stories of my slightly unusual approach to HR (like the time I blackballed a MD from a disciplinary meeting). It was for his own good – I know that he would have lost his temper and thumped the miscreant after 10 minutes and tribunals do not smile kindly on such behaviour.
Filming complete, ‘David Brent’ mingled with the birthday guests provoking a good deal of happy chortling into the pre-lunch fizz. Afterwards he shared some of his key management tips and entertained guests with the famous monkey dance.

We wish her all the best.
I quite like running when I’m chugging along at my own pace, thinking about various things and enjoying the countryside, but I have come to the conclusion that dodging round various curiously clad females going at different speeds, some sporting unguided missiles (pushchairs!) is a bit disconcerting.
This year we did the Race for Life in Bedford. The Race started from near the river and the course itself was very pleasant. Unfortunately, the course narrowed in a number of places and in the bottlenecks it was inevitable that most runners would slow to a walk. I know that if I have to start walking I might never get going again, so I tried to pootle along at a fairly even, albeit slow run, chirruping “excuse me please!”, “excuse me please!” like a demented Barbie doll whenever we got stuck in a narrow bit.
There were lots of onlookers cheering us on, a mixed blessing. The encouragement was great and very motivating. Less good was the fact that they were allowed a bit too close to the course, which meant more bottlenecks (harder for the runners).
I did manage to run all the way in just under 35 minutes, which was OK for a chugger. Katie and Michelle walked, and we have raised about £1,000. Thank you for your support! It’s an excellent cause.
